ALPINE, Calif. - An investigation was under way Thursday into a wild solo-vehicle freeway crash in Alpine in which a 38-year-old Pine Valley man was killed.
The fatality on Interstate 8 east of East Willows Road was reported at 10:18 p.m. Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim was driving a Volkswagen GTI at a high rate of speed in the No. 1 lane of westbound I-8 when he lost control for unknown reasons and went across the No. 2 lane and onto the right shoulder, CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said in a statement.
Witness told investigators that the car then veered to the left and onto the center median before rolling down an embankment that splits the freeway, he said. It came to rest on its wheels in the eastbound lanes.
The man sustained severe head trauma in the crash, Doerr said, noting he died at the scene.
It was not immediately clear if drugs or alcohol played a role.
