Driver killed in fiery crash in University City

Police say driver made unsafe lane change

SAN DIEGO - One person died in a fiery car crash early Sunday in the University City area.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at 3:43 a.m. at 7900 Genesee Ave., just south of Nobel Drive.

According to San Diego police Sgt. Dan Lasher, the driver had been traveling north and made an unsafe right turn.

The car then struck an abutment, causing the vehicle to burst into flames. The driver was trapped and died in the burning car.

No other injuries were reported. Information regarding the driver's gender and name has not been released.

The crash is being investigated by the SDPD's Traffic Division.
