Police are searching for a driver who hit a fire hydrant and left the scene of the accident on foot Friday.

A sports utility vehicle struck a fire hydrant in front of a Vagabond Inn on the 600 block of Hotel Circle South just after midnight.The collision smashed the car's front wheel and rendered it immobile. The driver was last seen running eastbound.San Diego police closed the area while firefighters attempted to shut off the hydrant, which spewed water 50 feet in the air.Firefighters had a problem turning off the hydrant valve because of debris.It took workers from the city's water department two hours to stop the flow.Authorities say water at the nearby hotel did not have to be shut down.10News spoke with the manager of the Vagabond Inn who said there was no damage from flooding in the hotel.Police are still looking for the driver of the SUV, which is registered to a person in the Rancho Penasquitos area.Copyright Do you have more information about this story?
