Driver extricated after pickup truck sheers power pole

SAN DIEGO - Firefighters had to pull a trapped man out of his pickup truck after he drove into a power pole, snapping it in half, before crashing into the front yard of a home in the Skyline neighborhood overnight Monday.

The incident occurred at about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday in the 7000 block of Benson Avenue.

Witnesses said the victim initially got into his pickup truck and started to drive, then immediately crashed into the pole, snapping off a bottom section, which he carried about a half-block down the road, until he rolled into the front yard of a house. The pickup truck landed on its side.

It took crews with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department about 15 minutes to extricate the man. He was allegedly fighting with medics and had to be tied to the gurney before being transported to a local hospital. His name and condition were not confirmed.

Power lines were left dangling over the street. As of 7:30 a.m., San Diego General & Electric said that 37 customers were still without power.

It was not immediately disclosed if alcohol played a factor in the crash.
