Driver crashes stolen car, escapes during police chase

SAN DIEGO - Police say a man crashed a stolen car into several parked vehicles and escaped during after a brief pursuit in the Southeast San Diego neighborhood of Valencia Park overnight Monday.

The incident began at about 11:45 p.m. Monday when San Diego Unified police tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver who was weaving in a Nissan and appeared intoxicated.

The man refused to stop, and a chase ensued. It ended in the 5400 block of San Onofre Terrace when he crashed into three parked cars, police say. The driver jumped out and ran. Officers gave chase on foot, but he escaped.

"I heard the tires screech around the corner, so I looked right out the window, and the vehicle comes up, sideswipes my car, sideswipes this one, runs right in there and the gentleman got out of the car and just…. (flees) right off into the darkness,” said neighbor Darrel Dodg, who witnessed the incident.

Police later discovered the car had been reported stolen. The suspect remains at large.
