Driver crashes car into apartment building in Encanto: Crash occurred after brief pursuit

Crash occurred near 54th Street at Imperial Avenue

SAN DIEGO - Police are searching for a man who crashed his car into an apartment building in Encanto.

The crash occurred at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday near 54th Street and Imperial Avenue.

It started when the driver of a white Toyota Corolla led police on a brief pursuit just after 10 p.m. Police say the pursuit was initiated near 60th Street and Brooklyn Avenue after the driver went through a stop sign and refused to pull over.

The driver lost control of his car and struck a fence before crashing into the apartment building.

"The car went into the building and residents were evacuated until a structural engineer came out to check for damages," said San Diego police officer Dan Lasher. "The residents were back in the apartment by midnight."

Lasher said the driver got out of the car, ran away and was being sought by police. He was described as a Hispanic male in his mid-20s who was wearing a blue sweatshirt and jeans. His sweatshirt was found discarded nearby.
