Downtown water main repairs under way

Two water main breaks happened weeks of each other

SAN DIEGO - Emergency repairs began Friday morning in downtown San Diego after two water main breaks in recent weeks.

Only one lane is open on F Street between 17th Street and Park Boulevard. The repairs will be taking place during the day between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"It's already hard enough to park down here," said Chris Stahl, who works and lives in downtown. "This is a nightmare."

Stahl is not happy he will have to face all the construction in a project that could take weeks.

"I understand they got to replace it, but they could make some type of concession and work through the night," Stahl said.

The first water main break happened on February 20, where thousands of gallons of water gushed onto F Street. The second incident happened the beginning of March on F and 14th streets. City officials say the pipe involved in the second incident is 102 years old.

Orion Construction is in charge of the repairs, and their workers started digging up the streets Friday morning.

City workers are telling drivers to be patient, but some like cab driver Felix Martinez, are running out of it.

"We're getting pretty much tired of the excuses. There's always roadwork, there's always the workers out there, but nothing gets finished," Martinez said.

10News was told that if workers find bigger problems underneath the ground, like contaminated soil, the fix could be more complex.

There is no estimate on how much the repairs will cost.
