Dog the Bounty Hunter joins search for MMA fighter

SAN DIEGO - Dog the Bounty Hunter has joined the search for a San Diego MMA fighter wanted for his alleged involvement in a domestic dispute in Las Vegas last week.

The 32-year-old fighter, who changed his name from Jon Koppenhaver to War Machine, is wanted in connection with the beating of his ex-girlfriend, porn star Christy Mack, on Aug. 8.

Duane Chapman, aka "Dog," told 10News he decided to get involved after a mutual friend of the victim contacted him.

"Some of the stuff he did to her was like unbelievable,” Chapman said. “This guy is a predator and what's he going to do to the next girl?"

Mack posted graphic images of her injuries on Twitter. She suffered 18 broken bones and a ruptured liver before she escaped. A man she was with also suffered serious injuries. San Diego police and the U.S. Marshals Service are also involved in searching for the MMA fighter.

Chapman issued a demand on Twitter telling War Machine to turn himself in. That deadline came and went Tuesday night.

"They know Dog Chapman is lurking in the midst, they know I'm coming after them if they issue a reward," Chapman said.

War Machine trained at the Undisputed Gym in the East Village. Fellow fighters said he was a popular kids' coach.

"Kids loved him, parents loved him, I saw a whole other side of the guy," gym owner Joel Rocco said.

Fighter Nick Barnes told 10News he was expecting War Machine to return to the club Friday night to watch him fight.

"It's like a buzz right now, it's one of those things where it's like wow, ‘cause you know a guy, and then you hear about something like this, and it's so strange," Barnes said.

Rocco said War Machine is no longer welcome at their gym.

"There's nothing that we can do to control anything that happens outside of the confines of this cage or outside of my gym," Rocco said.
