Update: Shortly before tonight's broadcast, Kira the Chihuahua was returned to her original owners by a third party. No reason was given for the prompt return. Kira was unharmed.

Original story follows below.

SAN DIEGO - Owners of a Chihuahua mix puppy says someone has their dog and won't give her back.

10-month old Kira got out of her yard in National City in mid-January when the gate was left open.

Elizabeth Lara and her boyfriend posted photos of Kira everywhere.

Then, on Thursday, they got a call from a woman who said she found Kira a day after she got out. Photos of the dog appeared to confirm it.

Because the woman wasn't allowed to keep Kira in her apartment, a friend had offered to care of her.  Text messages reveal the friend's intentions: she doesn't plant to give the dog back.

10News' Michael Chen spoke with the dog's owners and shared their message for whoever has their dog.
