KEARNY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Doctors say they’re seeing more patients come in with itchy red eyes and swollen eyelids.

Dr. Eric White, a VSP network optometrist, said he usually sees more severe cases later on in the year.

“We’re seeing a lot more people come in for allergies or last minute exams, not for their annual exams,” said Dr. White.

He suspects it’s because the spring storms have caused more flowers to bloom, so more pollen is in the air and on the ground.

“Everything is in bloom, we all see it, and because of that there is a tremendous amount of pollen in the air, and the pollen is aggravating everybody's allergies,” said Dr. White.

Santa Ana winds are expected this weekend, and more pollen could make allergies worse.

Those suffering from allergies should keep their windows closed and when the wind picks up, they should avoid being outside for too long.
