SAN DIEGO - A diver whose body was found under the West Mission Bay Bridge this week was a 26-year-old active-duty member of the U.S. Navy, authorities announced Friday.
The cause of death of the diver, who was found early Tuesday morning, was drowning, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, which released the man's age but not his name, which was expected to be made public once a next of kin has been notified.
A boater called lifeguards shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday to say he had seen a light floating under the bridge. When lifeguards went to investigate, they found the deceased diver under water tied to a rope attached to the light, according to San Diego lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum.
A dive team consisting of San Diego police and lifeguards worked for hours to recover the body.
