VISTA, Calif. - A deputy investigating a report of people smoking marijuana in an unincorporated area near Vista shot and wounded a man with whom she got into a physical struggle, authorities said Thursday.
Deputies responded around 7:50 p.m. to the 2200 block of Primrose Avenue after receiving a report that four intoxicated people were smoking marijuana in an apartment building laundry room, said Lt. Glenn Giannantonio of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Homicide Detail.
The first arriving deputy confronted four people in the laundry room area and "a physical confrontation ensued between the deputy and at least one of the subjects," Giannantonio said.
The deputy's Taser was deployed during the confrontation, he said.
10News learned the suspect was able to get the deputy's taser. That's when the deputy, fearing for her safety, fired her weapon, according to officials.
"The deputy fired at least one round from her duty pistol, striking the suspect at least once," Giannantonio said.
Twelve-year-old Jovian Madsen said he saw what happened.
"I heard a gunshot so I ran outside," said Madsen. "Then I see a lady cop with a gun and smoke coming of the gun. He was screaming, "Oh, I can't breathe.'"
The suspect was taken to Palomar Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. The deputy suffered unspecified injuries during the struggle and was also taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released, Giannantonio said.
