Deputies investigate shooting in Encinitas: Man arrested in connection with shooting

ENCINITAS, Calif. - A man was arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting outside an Encinitas home that left another man dead.

The shooting in the 2900 block of Lone Jack Road in eastern Encinitas was reported shortly after 9 a.m., according to sheriff's officials.

A dispute between two men outside of the home escalated into gunfire, sheriff's officials said.

Just before 5:45 p.m., sheriff's officials announced the arrest of 61-year-old Michael Vilkin in connection with the fatal shooting.

The victim, who appeared to have suffered a gunshot to the head, died at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.

"Investigators believe there are no outstanding suspects," Lt. James Bolwerk said.

10News learned investigators recovered the weapon used in the shooting.
