The pension reform measure on the June ballot will ask San Diegans to vote on whether new city employees – except police officers – should have a 401K retirement system or keep the current pension system.

DeMaio – who is also a San Diego city councilman – and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders say the current pension system is bankrupting the city.

"We're building a grassroots army of San Diegans who are fed up with the fiscal crisis at City Hall and that they want to see pension reform made the top priority of city leaders," said DeMaio.

The city's largest public employee union filed a complaint last week hoping to derail the June ballot initiative.
