Death of woman in federal custody investigated

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Authorities are investigating the death of a woman from Jamaica who was awaiting immigration proceedings.

Marjorie Annmarie Bell was being held in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when she was rushed to the hospital Thursday for chest pain, nausea and body aches.

ICE spokeswoman Lauren Mack tells U-T San Diego the 48-year-old Bell died several hours later.

Mack says the woman's family and the Jamaican Embassy were notified. An autopsy is pending.

Authorities say Bell was detained in December at the U.S.-Mexico border after showing a counterfeit Canadian passport.
