ALPINE, Calif. - The death of an 18-month-old toddler at an Alpine home Tuesday prompted an investigation by sheriff's department homicide detectives.

San Diego County sheriff's officials said deputies were called to the 300 block of Hunter Lane shortly after 12 p.m. to assist fire crews who were responding to a report of a female child found not breathing.

According to sheriff's officials, the child was inside a motorhome that was parked on the property. Attempts to revive the child through CPR were not successful, and the baby girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was withheld pending full family notification.

"Based on the circumstances and the presence of additional injuries to the victim, Sheriff's Homicide and Child Abuse detectives were called to the scene and have assumed investigative responsibility," said Lt. Kenneth Nelson. "There's nobody in custody because we don't know if a crime has been committed."

Lt. Nelson went on to say that this is being treated as a suspicious death and the Sheriff's Department is interviewing family members, including the child's mother and the mother's boyfriend.

Sheriff's Department officials confirmed the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office would conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
