CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Camp Pendleton has reached a deal with environmental group San Diego Coastkeeper to reduce sewage spills at the Marine Corps base in northern San Diego County.

U-T San Diego reports the settlement agreement was reached this week.

Coastkeeper sued in 2011, saying spills from the sprawling military base harm water quality in waterways and beaches.

Under the deal, officials at Camp Pendleton have pledged to reduce the number of spills and to notify Coastkeeper of spills that force beach closures. The base also planned to inspect and maintain its maze of sewage lines.
