SAN DIEGO - A man riding a bicycle was seriously injured when his bike was struck by a female driver as she turned onto a freeway onramp in the Grantville area of San Diego, a police officer said Saturday.
The collision took place about 6:18 p.m. Friday near 5600 Fairmont Avenue and an Interstate 8 onramp, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford.
A woman in her 50s, driving a 2005 Buick SUV southbound on Fairmont Avenue, came upon the bicyclist, according to Stafford.
Stafford said that while the bicyclist rode past the onramp to Interstate 8, his bike was struck by the SUV which was turning onto the ramp.
The cyclist, also in his 50s, suffered fractured ribs and a skull fracture. He was transported to a trauma center in serious condition, according to Stafford.
Authorities said the driver stopped at the scene and alcohol was not a factor.
The San Diego Police Department Traffic Division is investigating the collision.
