A South Bay cyclist is asking the public to help him solve a mystery that left him with major facial injuries.

Two weeks after his incident, Dave Clancy is still a little swollen and the healing has just begun. He said he was about 30 minutes into his morning bike ride in Otay Mesa, riding in the bike lane on eastbound Telegraph Canyon. He remembers crossing La Media Road, but nothing more.

"The next thing I knew, I was in the Target parking lot." Clancy said.

The Target parking lot is a good two miles from La Media Road. In that lot, Clancy stood daze and confused, unaware of how he even got there. His wife told him that when they talked, he kept repeating himself. She took him to the hospital.

"I don't know if I'll ever get that memory back of what happened," Clancy said.

At the hospital, Clancy was diagnosed with a concussion, and a surgeon said Clancy cracked his skull open and broke multiple bones in his face. Clancy had to have a plate inserted to help him heal.

"When it cracked my bone, it actually pushed my skin into the crack," Clancy said. "It was that severe."

The severity of the impact is one of the reasons Clancy has grown suspicious about what happened. He's also wondering about the lack of serious injuries to his hands.

"You're natural instinct is to put your hands in front of your face, for your arms to take the brunt of the impact," said Clancy.

Clancy said the way it all adds up, there must have been little to no warning before he went face-first into the pavement. He wonders: Did someone drive him off the road?

He's hoping that when they see this story, witnesses will come forward and help him answer his many questions about the accident on Oct 9.

"How could you do that and just drive away?" he said.
