A team of lifeguards, firefighters, and County Department of Animal Services personnel rescued a dog trapped under a pile of rocks on a La Jolla beach on Wednesday. The dog, a 7-year-old Jack Russell terrier named Fuji, was trapped between boulders for nearly 30 hours.Fuji's owner, Ruth Guymer, said the dog was chasing a rodent when it got stuck under the rocks on Tuesday."It's tough. It's hard to watch. I mean, it's hard to think about her being there for that long, cold and stuck and hungry and thirsty," she said.Guymer said the beloved family dog flew with them all the way from Australia after moving to La Jolla."I was kind of relieved when they tranquilized her so she's not feeling it," she said.Crews hoped that vegetable oil to help lubricate would allow lifeguards to wiggle the dog out but had no such luck. Six hours passed and then rescuers lowered in a fiber optic camera."We pushed, loosened it up," said a rescuer.Just after 9 p.m., County Department of Animal Services Animal Medical Operations Manager Dave Johnson pulled out Fuji and she was handed over to her very grateful owner."I was just really relieved and happy and I thank all these people so much," said Guymer.Fuji was rushed to the emergency animal hospital in Mission Valley where she is being checked out.
