Crews hit water main in University City

UNIVERSITY CITY - Several homes were without water Thursday after a contractor struck a water main while working in University City late Wednesday night.

Crews struck a 12-inch diameter concrete main at Genesee Avenue and Decoro Street at about 10:45 p.m., according to Arian Collins, a spokesperson for San Diego Public Utilities.

A few homes and an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Decoro Street were without water, Collins said. Water wagons were on site.

Repairs were expected to be complete and water service restored by early Thursday afternoon.

10News partner San Diego 6 reported that crews were digging up the street, working on a sewer line, when an excavator struck the pipe, causing massive flooding in the street. The flooding continued until about 1:15 a.m., when the water was shut off.

Police shut down the northbound lanes of Genesee Avenue, between Governor Drive and Nobel Drive.
