OCEANSIDE, Calif. - Firefighters in Oceanside doused two separate fires -- one at a warehouse and another at an apartment building.
The warehouse fire (pictured) was reported just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 4600 block of North River Road.
"It was really burning," said Oceanside resident Tina Bitters. "You could see different colored flames … yeah, all the way from Mission Hills."
Bitters tells 10News she heard explosions coming from the warehouse.
“We were here and for a while and it was getting bigger and bigger, enormous in a matter of minutes," she said. "There were a lot of explosions and crackling."
Oceanside Fire Chief Darryl Hebert says the warehouse is an old tomato packing plant that has been around since the 1950s. Fire officials say the building that was burning was a storage outbuilding used to house old equipment.
"A lot of old wood and stuff in the building, so it's a lot of fire load … that's why the flames were so large," said Hebert. "A lot of cleanup, so hopefully we can salvage some of the owner's supplies and some tools that might be valuable to them but just a lot of cleanup from here on out and keeping people safe."
The cause is under investigation. Crews are on scene continuing to mop up.
Firefighters also put out a 3-alarm fire at an apartment building in Oceanside. The fire was reported in the 900 block of North Pacific Street at about 8:13 p.m.
Officials say the fire started in the bottom story of a 3-story apartment complex in a heater lighting unit in the bathroom. The fire also spread to the two units above. At least 150 people were evacuated.
Firefighters were able to get a handle on the fire quickly. Crews from Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido and Camp Pendleton assisted Oceanside crews.
Four people were displaced from two occupied units. The third unit was unoccupied.
No injuries were reported in either of the incidents.
