Fire crews investigate boat fire at Coronado Cays

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV)--Neighbors were startled awake early Sunday morning as fire crews put out a blaze aboard a 20-foot Duffy electric boat, authorities said.

Smoke from the fire was first seen around 4:40 a.m. coming from the south side of the Coronado Cays. It was put out about 15 minutes later by 25 firefighters, according to 10News reporter Jessica Chen.

"Anytime that we fight a fire down on the docks, falling in the water is obviously a great concern of ours, especially with all the gear we wear," Coronado Fire Department captain Mike said. "Additionally these boats are constructed of fiberglass material so they burn very rapidly and very hot, and the close proximity to other vessels can cause multiple vessels to become involved."

Other boats were threatened by the fire, and two kayaks were also damaged, authorities said.

Harbor Police Department was contacting the owner of the boat, and the U.S. Coast Guard was brought in to remove contaminates from the water.

The cause of the boat fire was under investigation.
