Couple escapes Rancho Bernardo house fire

RANCHO BERNARDO - An elderly couple got out safely and rescued their cats in the process from a fire at their Rancho Bernardo home overnight Monday.

The fire broke out at about midnight near the kitchen of the home, located at 11275 Calenda Rd. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the husband broke a window to get the family’s cats out.

He was taken to a hospital to get treatment for a cut to his hand. His wife was treated at the scene.

It took crews about 25 minutes to douse the flames. There was a lot of clutter near the front door of the home that made it hard for firefighters to get inside, fire officials said.

Investigators suspect the cause was electrical. The damage was estimated at $75,000.
