North County residents may see plumes of smoke rising in the direction of Camp Pendleton this weekend as military firefighters take part in a brush-clearing controlled burn on the base, the Marine Corps advised Friday.

The prescribed fire will take place Saturday and Sunday near the School of Infantry-West, in the northwestern reaches of the USMC installation, officials said.The purpose of the operation is to reduce wildfire hazards in open areas where weapons training sometimes sets dry native vegetation ablaze.Copyright Do you have more information about this story?
