Congressman's reported campaign to deny support to Carl DeMaio, other gay candidates draws criticism

SAN DIEGO - A senior House Republican is drawing fire for a campaign to deny support for the party's gay congressional candidates, including Carl DeMaio, who is challenging Democratic Rep. Scott Peters.

According to Politico, Virginia Rep. Randy Forbes has "waged a lengthy crusade to convince his colleagues and the National Republican Congressional Committee brass they shouldn't back some gay candidates."

When asked if the Republican Party should support gay candidates, House Speaker John Boehner simply said, "I do."

In response to the reported campaign, the Log Cabin Republicans have blasted Forbes.

"Each candidate should be judged on their ideas and values, not their sexuality. Shame on you Rep. Forbes," said Susan Jester, who heads the San Diego chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans.

In a statement, DeMaio said: "Unlike Mr. Forbes, San Diegans are not focused on sexual orientation. To the contrary, I'm winning this district because San Diegans are looking for fresh leadership in Washington to reform wasteful government spending, revitalize the economy, and hold government programs accountable."

In an email to supporters, DeMaio added, "It's good that these few out-of-touch Members of Congress are the exception, not the rule. I'm thrilled that party leaders are ignoring the pushback."
