SAN DIEGO - 10News has learned that a dean at UC San Diego died while on vacation in Africa.
Dr. Tom McAfee was the dean of Clinical Affairs at UC San Diego Health Sciences.
A former colleague of McAfee's told 10News that McAfee was visiting a friend in Tanzania when he died suddenly.
Although he is still not sure what happened, the colleague believes McAfee was in some sort of accident and died from his injuries.
McAfee will be remembered for his commitment to UCSD.
"When he came to UCSD, he came there with a vision to make UCSD the place that provided the highest quality of care," said friend Steve Cummings.
After his vacation, McAfee was supposed to start his new job as the CEO of the Keck Foundation at the University of Southern California.
