SAN DIEGO - Three men were behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of murder in the 2005 death of a 20-year-old man in Alpine following a cold case investigation, authorities said.
One of the three men was also arrested on suspicion of two other counts of murder in connection with a 2002 death in Chula Vista and a 2003 death in National City, according to San Diego County sheriff's homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio. It was unclear whether the three slayings were related.
Jose Valdez, 30, John Reyna, 30, and Rashad Lansing, 33, were arrested Thursday and booked into jail on suspicion of murder and conspiracy in the October 2005 fatal shooting of Daniel Rodriguez, the lieutenant said, adding that the arrests were made by a coalition of law enforcement agencies that
includes the Sheriff's Department's Cold Case Unit, the East County Gang Task Force, Chula Vista and National City police, and the FBI.
Rodriguez was found with a gunshot wound to the head under a bridge at Interstate 8 and Tavern Road on Oct. 13, 2005. He died three days later.
In addition to the killing of Rodriguez, Valdez was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting Joseph Medina in Chula Vista on Dec. 11, 2002, and Francisco Chaires in National City in July 2003, Giannantonio said in a statement.
Medina was shot and killed in the 1500 block of Industrial Avenue.
Chaires was mortally wounded on West Eighth Street on July 6, 2003. A patrol officer heard gunfire and found Chaires shot in the head and in the driver's seat of his vehicle, which had crashed into a gas pump in the parking lot of a local gas station, Giannantonio said, noting Chaires died in a hospital several days later.
The motives for the killings were unclear.
