SAN DIEGO - A man bellowing racial slurs and making threats about shooting children at a City Heights apartment complex Thursday prompted a brief lockdown at a primary school a block away while officers descended on the neighborhood and took the troublemaker into custody.
A witness made an emergency call about 8:15 a.m. to report hearing the shouted verbal threats, which included statements about "killing people's kids with a shotgun," San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen said.
Patrol officers converged on an apartment building in the 4100 block of Estrella Avenue and quickly located the agitated 50-year-old man. No weapons were found, according to Hassen.
Administrators at Ibarra Elementary School on nearby Orange Avenue kept all students secured in their classrooms for about a half-hour, until police had the suspect in custody.
The man, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to a county psychiatric hospital for an evaluation, Hassen said.
