Chula Vista police seize 5,000 pounds of marijuana

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A driver ran a red light in Chula Vista, and police found about 5,000 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle, police said Sunday.
Officers stopped the driver for allegedly running a red light at Main Street and Industrial Boulevard about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, and discovered the he was unlicensed, according to Chula Vista police. The driver was identified by police as Christopher Velazquez, 19, of Bonita.
The truck was impounded, and inside it, officers discovered the 2-1/2 ton load of marijuana, police said. The estimated street value is about $2 million.
Velazquez was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of transportation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale, according to police and jail records. He was held in lieu of $35,000 bail and scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Chula Vista Narcotics Enforcement team was investigating, police said.
