Chula Vista police: Feaster Charter School student brought gun to school

Student showed gun to classmates, police say

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A South Bay student brought a handgun to school and showed it to classmates, but the gun was not loaded and no injuries were reported, police said Thursday.

According to Chula Vista police, an 11-year-old student at Feaster Charter School took the firearm to school on Jan. 31. Police said the "weapon was contained in a bag and was not brandished around and there is no indication the firearm was loaded."

Police said the boy had taken it from his mother's room.

School officials were told of the incident the following Monday and contacted police. The student who brought the gun to school was identified and "fully cooperated with our investigation," police said.

Chula Vista police Capt. Lon Turner said the fifth-grader made no threats of violence and had no plans to use the gun.

The gun is in police custody, and police said the case is still under investigation.

There was no immediate word regarding possible charges.
