Chula Vista police cite distracted drivers

CHULA VISTA - Chula Vista police issued more than 70 citations during patrols aimed at curbing talking and texting on cellphones while driving, authorities said.

Officers fanned out throughout the city between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday in search of distracted drivers, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

Of the more than 80 vehicles stopped during the patrols, more than 50 drivers were cited for talking on a cellphone while driving and 19 others were ticketed for texting, the statement said.

Seven drivers with a suspended license or without a license were also cited, and three of their vehicles were impounded, police said.
Citations were also issued for a red light violation and one for driving without insurance .

The patrol was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
