CARLSBAD, Calif. - A pudgy thief who claimed to have a concealed pistol robbed a North County bank Thursday.

The man, who appeared to be in his mid-20s to early 30s, approached a teller at the Chase Bank branch on Avenida Encinas in Carlsbad and demanded cash about 1 p.m., according to the FBI.

The victim turned over an undisclosed amount of money, and the bandit walked out of the bank and fled the area in an unknown direction.

Witnesses described him as a "chubby," roughly 5-foot-6-inch white man with hazel eyes and blond hair, the FBI reported.

He was wearing gray jeans and a shirt and baseball cap of similar color. The hat had the initials "N.Y." on it.

The robber claimed to have a gun during the holdup, though none was seen.
