SR-163 reopens at Washington Ave after a pedestrian death

SAN DIEGO - The death of a man who apparently jumped from a bridge over state Route 163 in Hillcrest Thursday forced a several-hour closure of the southbound lanes of the freeway during the morning commute.

The fatality near Robinson Avenue was reported shortly after 6 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Southbound traffic in and around Mission Valley was diverted onto westbound Interstate 8, Washington Street, Sixth Avenue and University Avenue until about 8:15 a.m., when all lanes were reopened. Due to residual tie-ups, a CHP congestion alert remained in effect in the area for about another half-hour.
