SAN DIEGO - The California Highway Patrol is investigating a report of a fiery plane crash on state Route 94 that turned out to be false.

On Thursday, CHP dispatchers received a call at about 7 a.m. that indicated a small plane with three people inside had gone down on westbound SR-94 near Lemon Grove Avenue.

However, when emergency crews arrived at the scene, there was no crash or aircraft.

CHP investigators later determined the report to be a hoax.

If the person responsible for the hoax is caught, he or she may face up to six months in prison.
