Child hit by car in Normal Heights dies at hospital

SAN DIEGO - A toddler struck by a car in Normal Heights died from his injuries, San Diego police told 10News Wednesday.

Police said the child, a 16-month-old boy, was hit in the 4400 block of Wilson Avenue, near Meade Avenue just before 1:30 p.m.

Family members say the niece of the boy's caregiver came to visit, and when she drove away, she ran over the child.

A 10-year-old boy -- who was also being watched by the caregiver -- found the young child lying on the ground. The caregiver took the injured boy into the home and called police.

CPR was performed on the child at the scene, and police said the toddler was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, where he later passed away.

Police said the driver, whose age was not immediately disclosed, did not realize she had struck the boy until she received a phone call from family members.

Police said the incident "appears to be an accident and the caregiver was unaware of what happened."

The SDPD's Traffic Division is investigating the incident.
