A 22-year-old man attacked employees with pepper spray while attempting to rob a pizzeria in Carlsbad with a BB gun before being subdued by the employees, police said Thursday.

Employees of Paradise Pizza at 2564 State St. subdued alleged robber Thomas Ruth after being sprayed with the pepper spray around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, wrestling his weapon away from him, according to Carlsbad police Sgt. Jeff Chapman.

They held him until officers arrived and took him to Tri-City Medical Center to treat a head injury he apparently sustained in the scuffle, Chapman said. Following treatment, he was booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of robbery, assault with a caustic chemical and burglary.

Ruth, a La Costa resident, was wearing a ski mask when he entered the restaurant and demanded cash, according to the sergeant.
