Sheriff's Department reviews eyewitness video of Carlsbad Fire

CARLSBAD, Calif. - The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is reviewing eyewitness video that appears to show to start of the Poinsettia fire in Carlsbad.

The video was shot Wednesday by Adam Jordan, who was working above Poinsettia Lane.

"I saw a bush on fire next to the golf course and then all of a sudden the whole tree got engulfed in flames," he said. "And you could see someone in a golf cart drive away, stop about a couple of hundred yards, turn around and just start watching it. From there it took a matter of 20 minutes to jump over the street into the hillside."

Minutes after he started recording, the fire climbed a neighboring hill and took off. By the end of the video you can see thick, black smoke pouring from a neighborhood.

"I didn't actually witness the man -- he was too far away to see what he was wearing," Jordan said.

Friday fire crews were cleaning up hot spots.  The Poinsettia fire damaged or destroyed 16 structures and killed one person.

Jordan said he did not see who started the fire he captured, but described a golf cart fleeing from the growing flames.

"That's exactly where it started, on the golf course," he said. "Fires can't start themselves."

Anyone with any information regarding the fires is asked to contact CRIME STOPPERS at 1-888-580-8477.  The caller may remain anonymous and a reward may be offered if the information leads to a conviction.
