Ron Capps' car exploded during a competition

POMONA, Calif. - A local race car driver miraculously survived—and walked away unscathed—from an explosive car crash on Friday.

Ron Capps, a Carlsbad resident, was competing in the National Hot Rod Association's Winter Nationals in Pomona when he barreled down the track while driving 300 miles per hour.

His car exploded, sending pieces of fiberglass shell into the air.

Capps, who has nearly 20 years of experience drag racing, wasn't hurt and advanced to the next round of the competition.
