SAN DIEGO - A woman escaped serious injury overnight after she slammed her car into the center divider on state Route 94 in the Bayview Heights area of San Diego.
The California Highway Patrol said the wreck occurred at 11:50 p.m. on eastbound SR-94 between Kelton Road and Federal Boulevard.
A witness told 10News that a small group of cars appeared to be racing on the freeway at speeds of more than 100 mph when the woman's Honda Prelude lost control and crashed into the barrier.
CHP officers would only confirm that the crash victim called 911 from inside the wreckage, telling dispatchers that she was trapped inside and that the car was smoking.
Witnesses said the woman was able to free herself from the wreckage before fire crews arrived to assist. She was treated by paramedics at the scene and released.
A second wreck took place further down the freeway just after the Honda crashed.
No injuries were reported in that accident.
It's unclear if the second wreck was a result of passing motorists hitting debris on the highway from the first crash.
In all, officers said at least six vehicles were involved in both wrecks.
