ENCINITAS, Calif. - The driver who was killed when his car slammed head-on into a pickup truck has been identified by the Medical Examiner as 23-year-old Joao Rocadas.
The crash occurred in the 1300 block of Leucadia Boulevard in Encinitas just before 7 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Anthony O'Boyle.
According to the Medical Examiner, Rocadas, a Carlsbad resident, had come to the United States from Portugal to attend school.
Rocadas was headed east in a Chrysler Sebring when, for unknown reason, he jumped a center median and drove into westbound lanes, slamming into a Chevrolet pickup driven by a 43-year-old woman, he said in a statement.
The impact caused the woman to strike a Ford F-250 traveling next to her in the same direction, O'Boyle said. The driver of the Ford was identified as a 43-year-old man who had his 12- and 9-year-old sons in the passenger seats.
Paramedics treated Rocadas at the scene but he died before he could be taken to a hospital, O'Boyle said.
The woman was flown to an area hospital. She was expected to survive, according to the sergeant.
The driver of the Ford and his two sons were treated and released at the scene, he said.
