SAN DIEGO - Police are investigating after a car drove through the entrance of a Payless Shoe Store in City Heights Thursday. The San Diego Fire Department says the crash occurred at about 10:45 a.m. at the Payless store on the corner of Fairmount and University.
No customers were inside at the time of the crash, but witnesses such as Francisco Paenado say the driver just drove through the parking lot and never stopped. "I see it coming inside the parking lot normal…the car never stopped!"
Angel Hernandez said the crash was so loud he heard it from his balcony. "I heard a loud noise. I could hear it from the top of the second-floor apartments." He says it sounded like an explosion. "Just a big boom, like a pop. I said ‘somebody got hurt!’"
Police tell 10News when a woman in her late 40s hit the gas instead of the brake.
No injuries were reported but medics did check the driver.The driver wouldn't speak on camera but her husband tells 10News she's physically fine, but shaken.
Hernandez is just glad it wasn't worse. "The good news is nobody got hurt."
Police are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were factors in this crash.
The Payless Shoe Store will not reopen until structural repairs are complete.
