Car crashes into Oceanside building

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A BMW sedan crashed into a hair salon in an Oceanside shopping center Friday, leaving three people hospitalized.

The vehicle crashed through the front of Country Club Salon at 2216 El Camino Real and struck the back wall around 9:20 a.m., according to Battalion Chief Terry Collis of the Oceanside Fire Department.

Two people were pinned inside the crumpled car and had to be cut out of the wreckage, he said.

"I heard glass breaking and kind of a 'boom.' I thought it was an earthquake," said Lilly Duong, the owner of Country Club Salon.

About 10 people were inside the salon when the crash occurred, Collis said.

Authorities said an elderly driver mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake, sending the car into the store.

"If someone had been sitting in the dryer area, they would have been killed," said Donna Hawkins, a hairdresser at the salon who later discovered it was her client that was behind the wheel.

One of the people injured in the crash was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla's trauma center, and the other two were taken by ambulance to Tri-City Medical Center, Collis said.

The driver was not hurt.

Deloria Taylor, another hairdresser at the salon, recently told a client she saw this happen.

"I've seen enough incidents where drivers have come up on the sidewalk or hit the mailbox or UPS box and knocked it over and I told her one of these days it's going to happen," said Taylor.

The store is insured, but employees will have to find work elsewhere as the salon will require extensive repairs before it's reopened.
