Car bursts into flames while on south Interstate 15: 4 escape from blaze

SAN DIEGO - Four people are recovering Tuesday after the vehicle they were riding in burst into flames while on a freeway.

The blaze occurred Monday night while the car was pulled over on south Interstate 15 just north of Friars Road in Mission Village.

The driver of the Jaguar told 10News that he and his passengers were coming from a restaurant in Escondido.

"We were just coming from a place to eat, Tom's Burgers in Escondido, and there was a clicking sound in the motor," said Joshua Rodriguez.

10News learned that the driver pulled over to a center divide and the passengers got out.

"I stopped by to put some oil in it, the check engine light lit on and 20 minutes later it caught on fire in the back by where the battery was," said Rodriguez.

Fire crews battled the blaze less than a foot away from the flames in the middle of the freeway

Rodriguez told 10News that everything he owned was inside of the vehicle.
