California sea lion gets head stuck on buoy in San Diego Bay

SAN DIEGO - A California sea lion got its head stuck in a 'buoy lifting eye' and rescuers stepped in to save the day.

The sea lion was spotted Wednesday on a navigational buoy at the entrance to San Diego Bay.

A rescue team from SeaWorld, with the help of the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, worked quickly to remove the sea lion's head from the buoy and set it free.

"This could have been a life threatening situation for the animal," David Koontz, a representative for SeaWorld, said. "We'd like to thank the Navy and the Coast Guard for their assistance."
