SAN DIEGO - Cal Fire investigators have determined that last week's Shockey Fire started in an area where target shooting takes place but the exact cause has yet to be determined, the agency announced Monday.
Cal Fire spokesman Mike Mohler initially said the fire was caused by target shooting, but later corrected his statement, saying that investigators are still looking into whether target shooting had anything to do with the fire.
Additional information was not released because the investigation is still under way.
The Shockey Fire broke out on Sept. 23 off Shockey Truck Trail and state Route 94. It burned about 2,500 acres and destroyed nearly a dozen homes and 14 outbuildings in the community of Tierra del Sol. One elderly homeowner was killed.
The fire was fully contained about five days later.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Cal Fire's arson hotline at (800) 468-4408.
