Cal Fire: Gunfire sparked Otay Mesa-area fire

SAN DIEGO - A fire that erupted Saturday in an area east of Otay Mesa may have been sparked by gunfire, a Cal Fire official told 10News.

The fire, dubbed the "Border Incident," broke out just before 4:30 p.m. near Kuebler Ranch Road and Otay Mountain Truck Trail. Its size was initially reported as 100 acres burned, but it was later downgraded to 20 acres.

About an hour after the fire started, Cal Fire crews were able to halt the fire's forward rate of spread.

On Sunday, a Cal Fire official said that gunfire in the area possibly caused the blaze. The official did not further elaborate and noted the incident is still under investigation.

No structures were threatened in the fire.
