LOS ANGELES - A pair of burglary suspects from San Bernardino County led police Tuesday on a chase that hit speeds of more than 100 mph, ending in South Los Angeles, where a female suspect was quickly arrested and a second was arrested after a short search.

The early afternoon chase went onto the Riverside (91) Freeway and onto various other freeways and surface streets in Los Angeles County before the driver of the silver sedan exited the Harbor (110) Freeway in South Los Angeles about 12:50 p.m. After winding through some surface streets, the car came to a stop and the apparent driver -- a man -- got out while talking on a cellphone and ran into a neighborhood.

A female passenger wearing a red or pink hooded sweatshirt got into the driver's seat and drove off. She sideswiped a bus and another vehicle while trying to squeeze between them at a congested intersection, then came to a stop, got out of the car and ran. She was also talking on a cell phone, but dropped it as she ran into a neighborhood.

She was taken into custody a short time later.

Police set up a perimeter in search of the first driver, and a suspect believed to be the motorist -- but wearing a baseball cap and a different shirt -- was arrested shortly before 1:30 p.m.

California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Jacobs said the chase began with a burglary in San Bernardino County. According to various television helicopter crews, the chase reached speeds of up to 120 mph.

When the chase wound through surface streets, the suspect driving the car nearly struck a child and a woman who had stepped into a crosswalk. The woman pulled the child out of the street just as the driver slowed the car.
