Brush fire burns off SR-78 in San Marcos

All lanes re-opened just before 3PM

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Crews were able to extinguish two brush fires in San Marcos that blew heavy smoke onto state Route 78 and prompted several lane closures.

The fire broke out just after 1:30 p.m. near the eastbound side of SR-78 near Smilax Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Another fire broke out on the westbound side 15 minutes later, the CHP said.

The CHP said smoke from the fire made its way onto the freeway, prompting heavy traffic in the area.

All eastbound lanes on SR-78 just west of Rancho Santa Fe Road were closed as crews battled the blaze.

The fire was doused shortly after 2:45 p.m., and all eastbound lanes were re-opened a short time later.

Authorities said a vehicle fire may have led to the brush fires.

No injuries or structure damage was reported.
