A six-year-old boy suffered fatal injuries in Otay Mesa West Saturday afternoon when a refrigerator fell on him, according to authorities.

San Diego Fire Rescue paramedics were called to 773 Beyer Way at about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Joe Amador said.

"He was transported to Rady Children's Hospital by ambulance Code 10, so that means he was in pretty bad shape," Amador said.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The accident apparently happened while some adults were attempting to move the refrigerator and the boy became trapped underneath it, according to Amador.

A paramedic who responded to the incident was heard on a radio reporting back to the hospital that CPR had been performed on the boy for about 12 minutes after he was found unconscious by first responders.

The boy's identity was not released and no other injuries were reported.

San Diego Police child abuse detectives were called to begin an investigation, as is customary in this kind of incident, according to Sgt. Ray Battick.
